Finding God’s Calling

Beyond athletics, there is a higher calling with which every Christian athlete must wrestle: What is God’s calling on my life?  If you are asking that question, you are demonstrating a pursuit that goes well beyond athletic success—it’s about discovering how to glorify Christ in every arena of life.

Before we can talk about the “what”, we must settle the question of who God wants you to be.  Romans 8:28–30 makes it clear that God’s ultimate calling is for His children to be conformed to the image of His Son. That means God’s first and greatest calling on your life is to walk with Him through faith in Jesus Christ.

As A.W. Tozer once said, “Before the Lord can use a man greatly, He must first break him deeply.” The starting line of God’s calling is surrender—not performance.

You have been testing this week and your progress has been measured by times and distances. But God measures success by faithfulness.  Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 4:2, “Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” Notice he didn’t say fast, famous, or first place. Faithful.

Many Christian athletes wonder, “Does God care about me in my sport?” The answer is yes. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”  Your training, discipline, and competition can all be acts of worship. Eric Liddell, the Olympic runner featured in Chariots of Fire, famously said: “When I run, I sense His pleasure.” God often channels our passions into platforms where we can honor and glorify Him.

Too many wait for a lightning bolt from heaven when God is calling us in the quiet routines of life.  Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Cross Country runners cannot see the entire racecourse as they run—just the next few steps. Be faithful in prayer, in Scripture, in integrity, and in serving others. As you obey today, God will direct your tomorrow.  Joshua 1:9 tells us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Hebrews 12:1–2 gives the picture every athlete can grasp: “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.”  So, fix your eyes on Him. Your calling for tomorrow will come out of where you are today. Be faithful in the place God has you today.  And know that wherever He leads, the ultimate goal is: to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

Don’t chase your calling like it’s a hidden treasure buried somewhere far off. Instead, walk closely with Christ today. Let your daily obedience, your passion for excellence, and your courage in faith open the doors God wants you to walk through.

Comforting, encouraging and motivating words. Saving that A.W. Tozer quote.
