Jumping the Hump: That Mid-Semester Grind

Every collegiate athlete knows “The Hump.” It’s that point in the semester when the excitement of a fresh season has worn off and the daily grind sets in. The workouts feel heavier, the papers stack higher, and social pressures grow louder. What was once new and energizing now feels like pure work.

Hey,  “The Hump” doesn’t have to defeat you. It can actually shape you. With the right perspective and response, you can “Jump the Hump” and grow stronger—not just as an athlete, but as a follower of Christ.

When training, professors, and relationships all demand attention, it’s tempting to think something is wrong. But Scripture reminds us this is simply the nature of growth: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” – James 1:2–3

The hump is not a wall designed to stop you; it’s a hill designed to strengthen you. Every rep, every late-night study session, every tough conversation with teammates is shaping endurance in your life.

Learn to Keep Your Eyes on the Bigger Goal!

Track and field is full of moments where the finish line feels far away. Life is much the same. Paul understood this when he wrote:

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” – 1 Corinthians 9:24

When you’re caught in the grind, remember why you started. You’re not just training for a season; you’re training for a life that glorifies God. That perspective gives meaning to the work.

The mid-semester pressures can leave your heart anxious and your mind clouded. But God’s Word offers an anchor:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6–7

Prayer isn’t just a last resort when the hump feels too heavy—it’s your first line of strength. A prayerful mindset helps you approach practice with focus, academics with clarity, and friendships with grace.

When the workout gets hard, it’s the presence of others that pushes you through. Draw on the power of your teammates.  Spiritually, the same is true.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” – Hebrews 10:24–25

Don’t try to “Jump the Hump” alone. Share honestly with teammates, coaches, mentors, and Christian brothers and sisters. And above all, lean on Jesus, who promises:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Sometimes the best way to keep going is to recognize the progress you’ve already made. Did you improve a split time? Finish a paper? Make a healthy choice socially? Celebrate it!

God delights in your faithfulness in the small steps. Zechariah 4:10 reminds us, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”

Don’t let “The Hump” stop you. It’s just like hill training, right? When you face “The Hump” with perseverance, prayer, perspective, and community, you don’t just survive it. You jump it.

So, lift your head, and take the next step in faith. The same God who called you into this season will carry you through it.

God Bless!
