Life is full of moments that shape us—transformational events that open our eyes to our purpose. In the story of Nehemiah, we see this powerfully demonstrated. When Nehemiah heard about the broken walls of Jerusalem, he didn’t just feel sad—he acted. He prayed, planned, and persisted in rebuilding those walls, driven by a God-given vision.
As athletes, you face trials, injuries, and setbacks that test your focus and endurance. Let’s take a page from Nehemiah’s story and focus on three key lessons to help you “run your race” with purpose:
1. Focus Brings Clarity of Purpose: Nehemiah began with prayer, seeking God’s guidance before taking action. What is God calling you to do in this season of your life? Maybe it’s building discipline, investing in relationships, or leaning into your faith. Seek clarity through prayer, just as Nehemiah did. Spend time listening to God and asking, “What’s my next step?”
2. Focus Overcomes Distractions: Nehemiah faced opposition and distractions, yet he famously said, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:3). In your sport, there will be critics, doubts, and temptations to lose sight of your goals. Stay locked in on your “why.” Remember, you’re not just running, throwing or jumping for yourself—you’re doing this for God’s glory.
3. Focus Leads to Completion and Celebration: Nehemiah and his team rebuilt the wall in just 52 days, but it started with four months of prayer. Transformation takes time and persistence. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, navigating a tough season, or rebuilding your faith, trust that God is working in the process. And when you reach the finish line, celebrate His faithfulness!
What “wall” is God calling you to rebuild? Maybe it’s your relationship with Him, your commitment to excellence, or your connection with your team. Like Nehemiah, start with prayer, focus on the work, and trust God for the results. Keep “running your race”, knowing that your purpose is greater than yourself. Let your focus glorify God and inspire others to do the same.
Let’s Pray: “Lord, help us to focus on the purpose You’ve placed before us. Give us clarity, strength, and endurance to press on, no matter the challenges. May we honor You in everything we do, on and off the track, in or out of the ring, on or off the runway. Amen.”
Keep Running, Jumping and Throwing for Him!
