It was awesome having you guys, the WSU TF team and coaches, at the church for a “Welcome Back” meal this past Wednesday. It was my privilege to pray for you as I prayed that God would give you an infusion of faith to trust in Him for a firm resolve in Character, an unwavering reliance on Him in the Classroom and a champion like resilience in Competition for 2025.
Trusting God in Character:
Character is built on trust and reliance on God. We can trust Him to guide our actions, attitudes, and decisions on and off the track, runway or throwing ring.
- Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” - Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
The development of these qualities through God’s Spirit helps to reflect Christ-like character in every situation.
Trusting God in the Classroom:
Academic excellence honors God. You guys have shown phenomenal accomplishment in the classroom. What? An average of 3.4, something, GPA? You have approached your studies with the kind of dedication that demonstrates exemplary character and reliance on Him.
- Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Trusting God in Competition:
The Christian athlete is reminded to compete with discipline, integrity, and a focus on eternal rewards rather than just earthly success.
- 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (NIV)
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” - Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Strength for competition comes from God. Just ask Lucy about what it took to punch her ticket to Nationals last year. Physical and mental endurance cannot be done without drawing upon human effort but trusting in God gives us a deeper well from which to draw.
So, Get Ready to High Five in 2025!
- Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Whether in character building, studying, or competing, God promises strength and perseverance to those who place their trust in Him.
God Bless your 2025!
Larry
