Time On Red Bull

Is time getting away from you?  Track and Field athletes are probably thinking, “Indoor is almost here.”  Cross Country athletes are thinking, “What?! The season has vaporized. Seniors may be thinking that a cap and gown is not that far away.  Most Freshmen are saying, “I didn’t think it would go THIS fast.

Even though it may seem like time has been drinking a double portion of Red Bull, it is at this time of year that most T&F XC athletes, feel the grind.   Early mornings have taken a bit of a toll. Daily work outs are definitely becoming “work”.

In our Christian walk, one of the most vital virtues we can cultivate is perseverance. This steadfastness is not just a personal strength; it reflects our trust in God and His promises. Throughout Scripture, we find countless exhortations and stories of those who endured with unwavering faith, teaching us that perseverance is both a journey and a testimony to the power of God in our lives.

Just as one needs to persevere as an athlete, and even more so in many ways, one certainly needs to persevere as a Christian.  Perseverance is not optional for the athlete.  Nor is it optional for believers; it is a core component of a faithful life. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 5:3-4 (NIV), “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” This passage emphasizes that perseverance builds our character and fuels our hope. It is through the trials and challenges that we learn to depend on God and grow into the people He has called us to be.

Our ultimate example of perseverance is found in Jesus Christ Himself. Hebrews 12:2-3 (NIV) encourages us, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross demonstrates the ultimate act of perseverance—enduring pain and suffering for a greater purpose.

Your perseverance as an athlete will not be wasted time and energy.  You will be rewarded for your hanging in there and continuing in dedication and discipline.  The Bible promises that our perseverance is not in vain. James 1:12 (NIV) proclaims, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” Here, James reassures us that enduring trials is not just an act of resilience but a pathway to God’s blessing.

While perseverance may feel daunting at times, believers are never expected to do it alone. God has equipped us with the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to endure and grow through each challenge. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) beautifully reminds us, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This promise is an assurance that when we feel weak, God’s strength will sustain us, enabling us to keep going when our own energy is depleted.

Perseverance Is a Pathway to Victory. Perseverance is more than just surviving hardships; it is an active, faith-filled trust that God’s purpose is being fulfilled through every season of life. When we anchor ourselves in God’s Word, lean on His strength, and follow the example of Christ, we find that perseverance transforms us. It molds our character and deepens our relationship with God.

Let us take heart in the promise found in Galatians 6:9 (NIV): “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” So, brothers and sisters, hold fast. Your perseverance is not in vain. God sees you, is with you, and will reward your faithfulness. Keep pressing on, for victory in Christ is assured.
