I’ve Got This!

2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)

“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”

Confidence is a crucial factor in the mindset for success. But, are we to take on life on our own and not expect or allow any advice or assistance from others? Those who have been successful in life and their careers have found that looking to others for advice has been a significant and key factor.

Mentorship is a profound theme in the Bible, where seasoned leaders guide, train, and invest in others to carry forward God’s purposes. From Moses and Joshua to Paul and Timothy, the Bible reveals the value of nurturing future generations of leaders through intentional relationships rooted in faith.

Paul’s relationship with Timothy stands out as one of the most significant examples of biblical mentorship. Paul poured into Timothy’s life, offering not only spiritual instruction but also practical advice for ministry. In his letters to Timothy, Paul encouraged, corrected, and empowered him, preparing Timothy to continue the work of spreading the gospel.

With regard to your athletic career, you might be thinking, “I’ve got this!” “I’m good.” If so, you may be missing a huge opportunity for growth and development. Yes, you have your coach and that person has played or will play a huge role in your development as an athlete. But do you have a mentor? This can be a teammate who can offer a different perspective. Someone who has demonstrated success in your area. A friend. Someone who is willing to hold a mirror helping you to see what might not be readily apparent to you.

The same is true in our Spiritual life. We all should have someone who can speak into our lives.

Reflection Questions:

1. Who in your life has mentored or guided you in your walk with Christ? …in your athletic endeavors?

2. How are you intentionally mentoring others, either through formal discipleship or everyday relationships?

3. Is there someone whom you can invite into your life to serve as a mentor?

4. What areas of spiritual growth can you foster in those around you, just as Paul did with Timothy?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the mentors You have placed in my life. Help me to see the opportunities You give me to mentor others. May I share Your wisdom, grace, and love as I guide and encourage those around me. Teach me to invest in others as Paul invested in Timothy, and may I leave a legacy that points others to You. Amen.

Action Step:

This week, consider someone in your life whom you can mentor or encourage spiritually. It could be a family member, a friend, or someone younger in the faith. Reach out to them with a word of encouragement, pray for them, and look for ways to build them up in their walk with Christ.
