Dependability

A dependable person is defined in Scripture as one who is faithful. The Greek word for faithful is pistos and means “trustworthy, reliable, faithful.” Paul was instructed to teach the Gospel to faithful men who would be able to teach others.

Every coach is looking for dependable athletes.  Every athlete is looking for dependable teammates.  And, each one of us should be looking for ways that we can show ourselves as dependable.  A few things to consider:

  • A dependable person is faithful in little things as well as big things.

Whoever can be trusted (is faithful) with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Luke 16:10

  • A dependable person keeps confidential information private.  “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” Proverbs 11:13
  • A dependable person is truthful in all that he/she says. “A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies.” Proverbs 14:5

Dependability includes not failing the people who are counting on us.  Stated more positively, we are always there for others and live up to our responsibilities to them.

Though others may expect us to be dependable, God knows that the ability to demonstrate such a quality does not reside within us.  Our strength must come from Him.  It is through His faithfulness to us that we can be faithful to others.

God’s faithfulness is most clearly revealed through Jesus Christ, whose character of ultimate reliability personifies what it means to be faithful or dependable. He is the faithful witness, Rev 1:5.  He is the faithful one, Rev 2:13.  And, He is the one called Faithful and True, Rev 19:11.

“Father, you have been so faithful in our lives.  We acknowledge our dependance upon you and  your faithfulness to your children.  Thank you for the responsibilities that we have been given.  Thank you for friends and the special relationships in our lives. Help us to be dependable in our responsibilities and to be seen as faithful and reliable in all we do.”  Amen

God Bless!
