Mental Grit

As we revisit Romans 12.2, let’s turn the prism a bit and look at this verse in a different light. Not illuminated by “self help thinking” as some would approach a renewing of the mind but considering how God has equipped us for mental challenges. Top of mind for the athlete should be the development of a Championship Mindset. A crucial factor in reaching that mindset is to focus on Mental Grit.

Mental Grit comes from a determination, dedication and discipline that brings one to perform at the best of one’s ability through any situation and particularly stress and pressure.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

If your goal in life is to bring honor and glory to God and walk in His perfect will, a transformation of mind needs to take place.  Key to that renewal is understanding that there is a prerequisite involving heart and spirit.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:1-3

Although our strength ultimately comes from Him, God has given us a free will to choose how hard we work, how we treat people, how we respond to circumstances. Mental Grit is a choice and exercised on a daily basis. Daily! A mindset driven by determination, dedication and discipline must infuse everything you do. First, in your relationship with God. (“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” MT 6:33) Then, academics…, practice…, relationships…, etc.

The pattern of this world is peppered with the philosophy of “will it to be”, “if you WANT it bad enough”, “dream it and it will happen”.   The renewed mind in Christ seeks God’s will, desires what He wants and does all in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Father, our desire is to be the best that we can be in a manner which brings honor and glory to your name. We know that our best efforts will come as we first yield our hearts to you. Help us to focus on you as the challenges of this day present themselves. Thank you for the victory that is ours through your Son, Christ Jesus and that “everyone born of God overcomes the world”. Renew our minds and transform our thinking in line with your perfect will. Help us to approach our goals in life with your empowering presence, knowing that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.”

God Bless!
